The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Monday, October 20, 1975 hams and bacon, game postponed

Another rainy day. It is awful rainy and wet. No ballgame. I done up my work, we got ready and went down to Gorham and took Betty’s hams and bacon down to be smoked. Also Betty got her trout for the well at Buxton and got some dry red kidney beans, potatoes and onions in Standish. Fern went with us, she had such a good time. In evening Betty and I called at hospital to see Kennard. He isn’t at all good. Bill didn’t work.

Tuesday, October 21, 1975 FERN’S BIRTHDAY, 73 YEARS

Nice mild day. I was down to Betty’s, we got the kids winter clothing out, put away the summer clothes. I had fried chicken for supper. Kennard about the same. Lloyd took Fern out for her birthday. Mrs. Bert Downey went with them. Had dinner at Richardson’s Motel.

It has been a very nice mild day. It was cloudy and foggy when we got up but 8:30 or nine it began to clear. I did a very big wash. I ironed, I mended. I cooked. I cleaned up the house and also we cleaned the two cars. Betty to her coffee group meeting in a.m. In the p.m. no school. Kimmy went hiking with the Girl Scouts to the top of Pleasant Mountain. Carmen and several other girls all at Carmen’s and went horseback riding. Bill worked at Betty Johnson’s, came home early. He had indigestion.
