The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, January 21, 1975 16° below here this morning, power went off

Very cold here this area. In town and in Sandy Creek it was 18 and 20 below. About 8:30 AM the electric power went off. Bill built a fire down in the stove down cellar. We went down there. Zak was here while Betty went to her meeting. Billie came home because of the loss of power. Bill had to go up to the camp. The pipes were all frozen. I wrote a letter to Stan. Got a card for Lawrence’s family. About 11 AM Dorothea and Dave came up. Had lunch with us. We was glad to see them. The electric power came back about 10:30. It was out all over the state. We went to town shopping. Betty and I. I ironed also. We called at Fern and Lloyd’s in evening. Lloyd all nerved up.

A nice day. I got up with the intentions of doing my Saturday work but Dorothea’s folks are having transportation problems, so Betty and I went down to talk to them to see if she will take Bill’s car to use it. So she said she would. So when we came back we cleaned the car up. Betty filled it with gas. Also we went to town shopping and cleaned Betty’s car and the truck. Bill washed that. They all look nice.
