The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, November 28, 1974 Thanksgiving Day

Partly cloudy. We had another nice Thanksgiving Day. The Horton family here. Kids are very good. They enjoyed being with their Nanny, Poppa and Bill. We had Turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnip, squash, onions, shell beans, celery, pickles, olives, lemon sponge and custard pies, filled cookies, cake, rolls and pumpkin bread. They stayed and had supper with us.

I done regular work. Went to town. Billie home, also Walt. Kids riding. Kim up here today.



Saturday, November 30, 1974 Lloyd had a bad spell

A nice sunny day after another very cold night. I done regular work. Washed, cooked, washed floor, ironed. Down to Fern’s. Lloyd had a bad spell. Call there again tonight. Lil not too good.



Sunday, December 1, 1974 $20

It was clear and sunny most all day. I did a dite of washing. Betty, Walt and Zak called. Lloyd better. I made out an order to Sears for Christmas. Billie called at Lloyd’s and Chet’s. Bill didn’t do much. Mr. Saltman called.
