The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 5 - 8, 1974


Tuesday, November 5, 1974 ELECTION DAY

It has rained all day. Zak up here again this a.m. Betty to her group meeting. I done some cupboards today. I had planned to wash. Bill up to camp this p.m. I was down to Betty’s in a.m. till she went away. Carmen up here for supper. She is a nice girl. Hope she will understand and be wise enough in this tough world and common sense enough to keep herself good and innocent. Also the other two as they get older. Had some a Betty’s ham for supper (delicious). Today was election day. A new governor, an independent, James Longley.



Wednesday, November 6, 1974

Another dreary rainy day. I didn’t do much. Betty came up and we cleaned the glass cupboards in the kitchen. It looks much better. Bill home all day. They got Ilan’s cellar floor in today.



Thursday, November 7, 1974

A very nice day. Betty came up and we cleaned my bedrooms. I’m so glad they are done. I did a big wash too. Betty went down to Bonnie’s in the p.m.



Friday, November 8, 1974 Carmen to her first dance tonight, Zak and Kim got school pictures

A nice day. Up, got the work done. Betty and I went to Portland. We called at Dorothea’s. Dave was there. They seem so very happy. She was the same as she used to be. Betty did quite a lot of shopping, Christmas. I got some groceries. I washed the bed spread this morning. Tonight Carmen went to her first dance (school). She had a good time, was very excited about it. Zenya was going but hurt her foot again. Kim and Zak got their school pictures. They are very good. Betty, Walt and Zak called in evening.
