The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 1 - 3, 1975 Carmen's 12th Birthday Party


Saturday, February 1, 1975

Another very cold morning. I done my work, did some cooking. Kimmy came up for the day and she did some cooking too. She had a good time up here. Betty and Walt down to Ferns. Zak was here while they were down there. Billie gone with Lawrence today. Carmen down to Lisa Osgood’s today. She went ice fishing with them and got three good fish. Bill up to camp.



Sunday, February 2, 1975

10 below when we got up. I rushed around, done up the work and Billie went down and got Fern and Lloyd. Fern and I down to Betty’s to help make the sandwiches. Thomases, Yates, Deming with the Hortons gave Carmen a happy 12th birthday. A nice day but cold.

Monday, February 3, 1975 $180.90, $83.80, 12 below

A very cold windy day. Got up, done up my work. Went down to Betty’s. We went down and got Dawn and then we went to Portland to Health and Welfare Department to sign up for Food Stamps. Came home, got dinner and then I figured my bills.
