The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 16 - 19, 1974


Saturday, November 16, 1974

A partly cloudy day. I done regular work and a big wash. Billie didn’t do much today. Bill didn’t either. Walt worked in a.m.

Sunday, November 17, 1974 $12.50

This is been a cloudy dreary day. Rain most of the day. I done a lot of work, cleaned up the house etc. Did a big ironing. I went down to Betty’s to babysit while she and Walt went over to Bonnie and Jim’s. Mr. Saltman called, wants Bill to do a few more jobs at camp. He paid him $12.50. Billie gone with Lawrence after cattle. Dorothea and Dave called for a short visit. Very glad to see them. They are okay now. Jeff is working. Carmen and Zenya rode the horses.

It was very cold when we got up. Betty and I went to Portland. Betty did some Christmas shopping. It was quite late when we got home.



Tuesday, November 19, 1974 Two Cats

A very nice day. I had Zak for the day or a.m. Betty to her meeting in a.m. and to Portland in p.m. She got me two kittens, a yellow tiger with some white and a gray and white. I did a very big wash. Esther over here this evening. Cliff came and got her. Bill worked up to camp for a little while.
