The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A beautiful day, mild and sunny. I done my regular work. Didn’t get up very early. I went down to Betty’s to see some things she wanted to show me. Then we went to town. We got some ice cream. After supper the Horton’s came also Esther and Cliff. We had cake and ice cream. Bill got $20 in money, some cute cards the kids made. Two nice cards from the Horton’s and Thomases and Jeff.

Tuesday, December 31, 1974 cold early when we got up, warmed up

Up about 8 AM, done up the regular work. Zak came up while Betty went to her meeting. Dorothea, Dave and Jeffrey called. It was so good to see them. Dave likes his new truck very much. I defrosted the refrigerator, ironed. In early p.m. Betty, Zak and I went up to Harlow’s at Camp Encore. Harlow’s selling their furniture to move to Florida. Betty bought some things. In forenoon (late) Carmen came up to stay for a couple days and nights. Randy called in evening. Billie down to see Dick Graffam from about his bull calf. Carmen and I sitting up tonight to see the old year out and the new year in.

No one in this family hospitalized this past year. We had a wet rainy spring. At the end of the spring season on June 19 at 2:50 PM Christie Crook was put to eternal sleep by Dr. Charles Gauger. She had been very sick all spring. We loved her and she has been missed each day ever since. It don’t seem possible she has gone. It turns my stomach over when I think of her. She was such a wonderful dog.

In August on the 8th Pres. Nixon resigned as president of the United States. Vice President Gerald Ford became president. Watergate hearings all going on.

Jeffrey went to Michigan to visit his dad and grandmother. While he was gone Dorothea came up for a few nights. We went around looking up dates on her family records. We was so glad to have her up with us.

We got the barn built this summer. Billie is so pleased with it. We got four head of cattle in it. Betty sold Bingo to a girl in Sweden. Has a good home up there and she replaced them with another nice horse BJ. She was a racer, very pretty. Sold her and bought another small horse. Nice horse.

We went on a family picnic up to Cold River this summer for the anniversary a Betty and Walt’s wedding and Dorothea’s birthday. A cloudy foggy day, had a nice dinner and a good time though. Betty’s family away in middle of summer on a few days vacation. Hortons bought a brand-new Chevrolet pickup truck in January. Early this fall they bought a 1972 Ford LTD deluxe Ford station wagon.

Zak began school this fall. Kim in third grade, Carmen began junior high sixth grade. Jeff a sophomore at Westbrook High School.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Vose moved in to Aunt Ava’s new home. Weldon had opened house over there. We all went. Delores not good this whole year. Had bad drought the summer.

This year has been a bad year for everyone financially. A recession. We are in inflation, it is very bad. First of the year a gas shortage. No rationing. As June and summer months and vacations came gas came back. We had a very mild winter, not enough snow to keep the snow slopes open for skiing. On 4 of July we had a very bad storm with tornado winds. The area around here was damaged badly.
