The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Delores called  in pm.  Smart girls here today. Did regular work. Raymond went to town with us tonight.



Sunday, January 4, 1948

Billie and Glenn C. (Chadbourne) went ice fishing. Bill didn’t do much. Fern and Lloyd called in eve. I made some fudge in p.m. Hayd came up to see Bill.



Monday, January 5, 1948

We washed. Cloudy but warm. Jean got a note from her father. They are to set sail 14 - 19 of this month. Bill and I down to Jean’s in eve. School began.



Tuesday, January 6, 1948

It was cloudy. Got the clothes in.



Wednesday, January 7, 1948

I ironed this morning. Billie still over to M. (Maple) Lane.

We washed. Fair today. Nice and warm.



Friday, January 9, 1948

Big storm. Bill didn’t work. He and Bob hauled shavings for hens. Bill up to Hayds in pm to eve.

Snowdrifts this morning. Bill didn’t work. He, kids and I went to town in PM. Evelyn called in PM.

Billie down to Lloyds to work. Hayd called in eve. Fern and Lloyd came up.



Monday, December 29, 1947

We washed. A very cold day. Bill came home at noon. So windy.



Tuesday, December 30, 1947

Bill and I went down and got his license. Called at Godens, Jack, Jean’s and Kennard’s. Bill’s day. Birthday 39 years.



Wednesday, December 31, 1947

Billie began work today at Maple Lane Farm. Cold. Ronald hurt a boy today.




Thursday, January 1, 1948

Bill worked. Kennie and Dot came up. Kennie’s forehead swollen. He has been to see Dr. Hebb.



Friday, January 2, 1948

We did regular work. Joy here all day. They had Ronald’s trial.

December 20 - 26, 1947 Merry Christmas

Dorothea and I got Christmas tree today. Also Dorothea got one for Aunt Linnie. Carlton came tonight from college.



Sunday, December 21, 1947

Bill and Evelyn called. Bill and I up to their house in PM. Carlton called on us today.



Monday, December 22, 1947

Washed. Mama down to Dot’s and Mina’s. Joy and Lutherhale girl called. Billie over to Raymonds to work.



Tuesday, December 23, 1947

Stormed. Dorothea down to see Sara. Mama, Betty and I made corn balls and fudge. I went to town shopping tonight. Bill to movies. A snowstorm came.



Wednesday, December 24, 1947

Cooked. Washed floor, went to town before supper. Dolores and Brud brought up fruit from Es and Milan.



Thursday, December 25, 1947

Nice day. Lots of presents. Betty got her cart and carriage. Dorothea got her camera and a nice doll. Bob and Joy here for dinner, had good time. Chicken, roast pork, mashed potatoes, onion, squash, turnips, peas, shell beans, cranberry sauce, rolls, pickles, date, custard, chocolate, lemon, Apple pies ice cream cake, cream puffs, and suet pudding.

Cleaned up the Christmas mess. Dolores called, also Dot and Mina. Very bad storm in New York. Hit Maine tonight.

Billie worked at Lloyds. Bill up to Bob’s and Hayd’s. Dorothea up to Joy’s all day.

We washed, nice day. Bill worked at Jim’s. We got a very nice letter with a check from Blynn Davis.



Tuesday, December 16, 1947

Bad storm this morning. No school. Bill didn’t work. Helped Hayd to kill his pig. He and I went to movies in eve.



Wednesday, December 17, 1947

Bill to movies tonight -fight picture on. Billie to senior dance (or drama)  with Glenn. Raymond called in eve. Ned the yellow cat dead.
