The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 20 - 26, 1947 Merry Christmas



Saturday, December 20, 1947

Dorothea and I got Christmas tree today. Also Dorothea got one for Aunt Linnie. Carlton came tonight from college.



Sunday, December 21, 1947

Bill and Evelyn called. Bill and I up to their house in PM. Carlton called on us today.



Monday, December 22, 1947

Washed. Mama down to Dot’s and Mina’s. Joy and Lutherhale girl called. Billie over to Raymonds to work.



Tuesday, December 23, 1947

Stormed. Dorothea down to see Sara. Mama, Betty and I made corn balls and fudge. I went to town shopping tonight. Bill to movies. A snowstorm came.



Wednesday, December 24, 1947

Cooked. Washed floor, went to town before supper. Dolores and Brud brought up fruit from Es and Milan.



Thursday, December 25, 1947

Nice day. Lots of presents. Betty got her cart and carriage. Dorothea got her camera and a nice doll. Bob and Joy here for dinner, had good time. Chicken, roast pork, mashed potatoes, onion, squash, turnips, peas, shell beans, cranberry sauce, rolls, pickles, date, custard, chocolate, lemon, Apple pies ice cream cake, cream puffs, and suet pudding.

Friday, December 26, 1947

Cleaned up the Christmas mess. Dolores called, also Dot and Mina. Very bad storm in New York. Hit Maine tonight.
