The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 12 - 18, 1947 New Bike For Dorothea



Saturday, July 12, 1947

Dorothea got her brand-new BIKE. From Wales Hamblen. $39.50. Nice day. Bill stayed home and put out the chicks. Bill, Billie and I rode on the new bike.



Sunday, July 13, 1947

We washed. Had showers in PM. Jim and Mildred came and got milk.



Monday, July 14, 1947

Picked strawberries, last ones for the store. Had a nice crop of them. Papa gone one month today.



Tuesday, July 15, 1947

Betty and I called at the Carl – Vern and Minnie’s. Dorothea began her swimming lessons. Mama got birthday cards and money on her birthday. We got our chicks from Mel Greens for berries. $15.86



Wednesday, July 16, 1947

Nice day. I went up to Rados and picked some peas. Dot and Mina called. Got the tractor started. Val and Rayburn still working on barn.



Thursday, July 17, 1947

Picked some more berries.



Friday, July 18, 1947

Picked berries. Val helped me. Dorothea and I went to town in PM. Bill down to Charlie’s before supper.
