The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 16 -22, 1947



Saturday, August 16, 1947

Much cooler. Picked and Mama canned 7 quarts string beans. Dorothea and I picked 15 quarts blackberries at Ferns. Canned 14 pints blackberries. Blyn Davis called. Downtown with Delores in the evening. Got another bushel peaches. Rained some today.



Sunday, August 17, 1947

Bill worked up to Kennard’s. I went up and called a few minutes in p.m.



Monday, August 18, 1947

Washed. Churned. Kennie, Fern, kids and I went up to Sweden blueberrying.



Tuesday, August 19, 1947

Canned blueberries and string beans and some peas. Bill home with lame back. Came off hot again. Carlton came up and said goodbye. Thena and George called.



Wednesday, August 20, 1947

Mama went to Portland with Dot. Aunt Mina not very good. Ed was glad to see her. Carlton left for Ohio to go to college.



Thursday, August 21, 1947

A very hot day. Need rain awful bad. Cleaned up the house. Dot went on a picnic over to Woods Pond.



Friday, August 22, 1947

Washed, churned. Very hot. They took Uncle Sulmore to hospital.
