The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 1 - 3, 1969


Saturday, March 1, 1969

A nice day, but a lot of snow. I done up my work, talked with Betty. Bill had to work all day. Billie worked at Raymond. In p.m. he took me to town. We took Aunt Ava and went over the ridge to see the snowdrifts of 15 to 20 feet high on the Upper Ridge. Fern up for supper. Billie took her to see the drifts. Dave home today, he is to have every other Saturday off.



Sunday, March 2, 1969

A nice day. Billie did some shoveling. I did regular work. Got a roast pork supper. Bill worked all day. We looked for Dorothea’s folks. Didn’t come. Fern and Lloyd called in evening. Snow snow snow and all snow. The drifts are so high and it is everywhere. We can’t see into the road except at the very end of the driveway.



Monday, March 3, 1969

Wind, snow and blow. Another one of those days. Same pattern as one week ago. Except cleared in evening. Wind finally went down. I went to town with Fern and Lloyd, errand for Billie. I done up regular work. Talk to Betty. She had a happy weekend. Dorothea, Jeff, Joy and girls called on her. It did her so much good. Kim had a slight cold. Bill had to go back to work tonight. Billie late getting home. Dorothea called tonight. Town meeting postponed tonight.

February 25 - 28, 1969 Another Blizzard


Tuesday, February 25, 1969 BLIZZARD

Another big blizzard. It began yesterday with a ordinary snow storm. It snowed hard and wind blowed hard all night. Drifts and more drifts. Bill out all night, home for breakfast about 9 AM. Billie got out and went to work. Had to shovel some to get out. No mail today. I’ve been thinking of Betty and children today. Hope they are all right. I done regular work, mended a dress. I got a brief call from Betty.

Wednesday, February 26, 1969 BLIZZARD continued


Continuance of the blizzard and storm. Billie didn’t get to work. I washed those sheets. Been thinking of Betty all day. I called her. She didn’t feel very good, Walt home. Bobby Stanford called. Lloyd home tonight because of the storm.



Thursday, February 27, 1969

Cloudy, snow and blow. I ironed the sheets. Washed, talked on the phone. Delores to the doctors to have a boil taken care of. Billie got to work today. Bubba Clark called and Ilan also for a few minutes. Bobby Stanford called. Lloyd didn’t work. They got plowed out after supper. Got mail today, first time since Monday.



Friday, February 28, 1969

Sunny today. Sun shown today, the first time since Sunday. I have done up regular work. Ironed. Baker got here today. I talked with Betty. This is the first time we have had sun since last Sunday. I did not work at Dorothy’s.

February 21 - 24, 1969


Friday, February 21, 1969 $4.50

Mild temperature. It was cloudy again this morning but cleared about 10 AM. I worked at Dorothy’s. Been thinking about Kim. Came home, did a wash and ironed. Went to town soon as supper.



Saturday, February 22, 1969

Mild temperatures. It was a little cloudy and foggy in early forenoon. It cleared. Betty and girls got here about 10 AM for a couple days. Kids are feeling well. Betty, kids and I to town,did some errands and got a few other things. No mail today. Betty and I sat and talked until late tonight. Fern up for supper. Billie, Carmen, Betty and I played cards.

Sunday, February 23, 1969 got a new ironing board cover

A nice mild day. We didn’t get up too early. Had breakfast. Kids outside with Bill for an hour or so. Dorothea and Jeff came. Dorothea had a flat tire when she got here. Bill to get off for her. She took it down and got it fixed. We had dinner. Birthday cake for Betty. In p.m. Bill borrowed Junior Hatches camera and we took some instamatic self developing pictures of the house. Very good. Going to send them to Scotland. Betty and kids left for home about 3 PM. Dorothea had to go early because Joy was there. Bill took me down to Thomas’s to get a ironing board cover. Fern and Lloyd here in evening.



Monday, February 24, 1969

It is snowing today. I done up my work, did a little ironing. I got my new ironing board cover on. It is nice. I hope Betty is happy. She had a happy weekend.

Tuesday, February 18, 1969 mild temperature

A nice sunny day. I ironed, done up my work. I talked with Betty. Tonight Billie was down to Dorothea’s for supper. He brought Jeff home for a couple of days. Mild temperatures.



Wednesday, February 19, 1969 mild temperatures

Mild temperatures but it rained and some light snow flurries. Jeff looked at some pictures, played with his matchboxes. I done regular work. We had a T-bone steak supper. Jeff liked it very much. Mrs. Nemei called flower money for Jack(?) Laffin.



Thursday, February 20, 1969 KIMBERLY A HORTON

Mild 30 and 40°. It was cloudy in a.m. but it cleared off and it was a nice clear sunny and mild. The snow settled some. Jeff and Randy played together today. Jeff packed up and went home tonight. Bill and I took him home. Dorothea looked tired.

Today Betty took Kim to the hospital for a checkup. The doctors examined her, took (?)list and x-rays, was working on her for close to three hours. She is not in satisfactory condition. They decided to operate on her as soon as possible. Open HEART Surgery. We are all quite concerned tonight. They will let them know in about a month or less.

Clear and sunny but the wind blows hard. I done up my work. Worked at Dorothy’s. Came home, washed. Washed windows, kitchen floor, wrote out my store list etc. To town after supper. During the evening TV went out.



Saturday, February 15, 1969

10 Degrees above zero this morning. I did the sheets and pillow cases this morning. Made the beds up clean. I did a dite of my cooking. Betty called.



Saturday, February 16, 1969

A nice day. Got up about 8:30. Took a bath. Got breakfast, did up the work. Read paper. It was a beautiful day. In evening we went down to Fern and Lloyd. Dorothea and Dave and Jeff were there. We had a nice evening.



Monday, February 17, 1969 a nice mild day

A beautiful day. It was 10° this morning. I done up my work. Went to town with Fern and Lloyd today. Came home. The Raleigh man called. I had a call from Betty.
