The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, February 2, 1969 Carmen’s birthday celebration for February 7

A pretty nice day. Betty, Walt and girls came about noon. We had a good ham dinner. In p.m. Fern and Lloyd came. Late p.m. Dorothea and Jeff came. We had a party for Carmen. She got a lot of nice gifts. Also we had ice cream and cake. She enjoyed it all very much.



Monday, February 3, 1969

We had a snowstorm about 10 inches. Walt went to Portland and Augusta. They were going home, but because of the bad storm they stayed. Walt didn’t have any luck in getting any work today. Bill back to work tonight. He worked until about 4 AM. Came home.



Tuesday, February 4, 1969 10 below

Very cold and windy. We are having some very cold weather. Windy. Bill came home at about 4 AM, went back to work and then came home at 11:30 to sleep all p.m. He told Betty and I to take the car and go look for a place, we did. We found a few. Called at Dorothea’s. Bill out plowing snow drifts tonight. Very cold and windy.



Wednesday, February 5, 1969

Four below. I worked for Mrs. Stanford today carrying from Mark. He has the mumps. Betty and kids home alone. In evening Betty and I called at Aunt Ava’s. In p.m. Betty and I watched TV. Bill came home about 3 AM.
