The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 10 - 13, 1969 Bad Blizzard


Monday, February 10, 1969 Bad Blizzard  Kennard won $24


Not too cold today. The wind blew quite hard today. The snow drift are so high and the snow banks too. We had an awful bad blizzard last night. It snowed yesterday, last night awful winds. We had about 20 to 24 inches of snow. I took care of Joy’s girls while she went to Stan Whitney’s funeral. Billie couldn’t get to work. Bill out all last night. Betty called. Kennard won $24 on Dialing for Dollars today.



 Tuesday, February 11, 1969

20° this morning. Billie got out, went to work. Bill got home about 1 AM. Back to work this morning. I wrote Susan, Norma and Betty Smith this morning. Bill called in on his way by plowing snow. Mild day. I wrote to Susan, Tom, Norma and Jim, and Milan and Betty.



Wednesday, February 12, 1969

Not too cold. I washed, hung the clothes downstairs and on rack in breezeway. I wrote to Esther, Jean and Lila today. Had a delicious chicken pie for supper. Called at Aunt Ava’s in evening and at Fern’s.



Thursday, February 13, 1969

20° temperature. Cloudy, snow flurries, clear and mild. I done up regular work. To town with Fern and Lloyd. Sent Valentines to kids. Having Otts for supper.
