The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 - 12, 1969


Thursday, January 9, 1969

Not too cold and fair weather. Partly cloudy. Kennard called, brought back my can of paper documents etc. he took home to look over. He took them up over a year ago. I picked over the safe-deposit box. Billie didn’t get his car again tonight. Bill and I down town tonight.



Friday, January 10, 1969

Snow flurries. I made out store list. Did some figuring. Went to town with Fern and Lloyd. Got Billie’s shoes. Came home, made a pie. Shampooed my hair and put the rinse on. Went to town after supper than down to Fern’s while Billie went to get his haircut. Billie didn’t get his car tonight. Bill has his car all fixed up now. New tires, new exhaust a new back springs. New tires.



Saturday, January 11, 1969

A beautiful day. I did up my work. Washed windows, got a bath taken. Joy came and brought my new dresses so I can wear when up to Betty’s. Bill stopped, got a haircut. Came home, had lunch. We got ready and left about 1 PM. Had a nice trip. That there about 3:15. All glad to see each other. Betty, Carmen and I went out to the Giant store. I got some cosmetics. No tax and on sale. Went home, had supper. Did up the dishes. Betty, kids and I down cellar picking over some clothes, skirts etc. Bill and Walt watched TV all afternoon and evening.



Sunday, January 12, 1969 East Concord NH

A nice day. Got up about 830. We had breakfast. Betty cleaned up the house. Bill and Walt worked on the bathroom etc. Betty, kids and I to town. Had dinner about 1:30 or so. We left for home about three. We had a very nice weekend. Kids were all well. Kimmy little thin and pale looking, still has a cough. Betty real thin and not too good I’m afraid. Got home at 5:15 PM. Got supper. Fern and Lloyd up in evening. We had coffee, crackers and cheese.
