The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 15 - 19, 1956



Tuesday, May 15, 1956

Fair. I helped Fern clean her pantry. Edith McAllister and family up here in evening, also Goden and family. I did some mining. Billie brought home pig tonight.



Wednesday, May 16, 1956

Helped Fern clean her back kitchen. She finished her cleaning today. Bill home because it rained. He did a good job covering the kitchen shelves.



Thursday, May 17, 1956

Cleaning kitchen today. It is cold and cloudy. Billie got home early tonight. Robert went into hospital today.



Friday, May 18, 1956

A very cold day. We finished cleaning the kitchen. I went to town and got curtains for living room. Also Venetian blind for bathroom. Betty to movies tonight with Jill. Robert operated on today for a gland trouble etc.



Saturday, May 19, 1956

I cooked, churned, cleaned up the house, to town and in evening we painted floors. A fair day but cold. Betty didn’t do anything special. She did wash supper dishes.

May 11 - 14, 1956



Friday, May 11, 1956

A very clear pretty day. But cold. I helped Fern clean. We did her kitchen (no.1). Tonight Kennie was up here and they got the bathroom downstairs already for use. Betty over rollerskating in Harrison.



Saturday, May 12, 1956

A very hot day. First one this spring. Moved couch on porch. Cleaned up the house. Kennie and Dot here this Eve. Kennie worked on bathroom. Went to town before supper. Hurt my finger. Shut it in car door.



Sunday, May 13, 1956

A very nice day. Kennie and Dot here. They finished up the bathrooms. I got three boxes of candy, a picture and a medicine cabinet for Mother’s Day. Also pretty card. Mama got a lot of nice things. Kennard, Dolores, Bob and family, Fern, and Lloyd. Billie done a little fencing. Blondie went back today. Ate on porch for first time.

A very rainy day. I did a big wash, churned and did some cooking. Bill worked all day.

May 6 - 10, 1956 Smelting Season

A fair day. They finished hauling out the dressing. Kennie up and done some work. Billie smelting tonight.



Monday, May 7, 1956

A nice day. I washed, cleaned the china closet. Got the clothes in. A big washed today. Over to Aunt Linnie’s in evening. Bishop Boy bought the old electric stove and gave them the phonograph. He got them tonight.



Tuesday, May 8, 1956

A very nice day but awful cold. I cleaned the dining room. Kennie and Dot up in evening and Kennie worked on bathroom.



Wednesday, May 9, 1956

Fair. I sent Dot coats and blouse to her. I went down and helped Ferns helped her clean her living room. Came home, churned and did my ironing. Kennie up again tonight. Billie smelting again tonight. They began to haul out the timber.



Thursday, May 10, 1956

Rainy. I went down to Fern’s today, we cleaned her dining room. Got it done a little after dinner. Kennie and Dot up tonight. Cold. Billie home early and got ready and went up to Rangeley with some guys smelting. Raymond called tonight.

A very nice day, I churned, and clean Dorothea’s room. Betty and Holly to movies in the evening. House is an awful mess. Mr. Vince Yates quite sick.

I cleaned Betty’s room. A nice day.



Thursday, May 3, 1956

A rainy day. Bill didn’t work. I went to town in a.m. In PM cleaned dark bedroom and my room.



Friday, May 4, 1956

Cloudy, little sun. I cleaned Billie and Donnie’s room. Mary Howard called here for a little while. Over to Dr. in evening for Donnie. Down to Barbs.



Saturday, May 5, 1956

A nice day and I cleaned the setting room. Barb and Phil married today. We moved television to other side of room today. Billie smelting. The first letter from Dorothea after she got to Wyoming. Also a nice box of chocolates. I shopped for Donnie.

April 27-30, 1956 Dorothea off to Cheyenne, Wyoming



Friday, April 27, 1956

In forenoon Dorothea, Donnie and I downtown. I paid up bills. Barb here in p.m. Dorothea down to Conant’s for supper. She, Judy, Dick and John went bowling in eve. Betty to dance in eve. Bill worked. Cloudy.



Saturday, April 28, 1956

A very nice warm day. I cooked. Dorothea worked on her clothes and packed some. She done a lot of calling. Lloyd up, they hauled dressing. Bill didn’t work over to Jims. Edith and Judy here. Betty to movies in eve.



Sunday, April 29, 1956

A dreary day. We took Dorothea and Judy to meet the train to go back to the service to Cheyenne Wyoming for 12 weeks school. Hated to see them go. But they are much better off than being here with nothing to do. Dorothea has had a good time.



Monday, April 30, 1956

A very good day except some cloudy in early a.m. Nice clear and warm in p.m. Daylight saving time. I did an extra big wash today. Ironed it all, curtains and all in evening. I cleaned back porch today. Billie began work today for Chet for the summer. Missed her all day.
