The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 12 - 14, 1958



Sunday, October 12, 1958

A very nice pretty day but awful cold and windy. Kennard, Delores and I went for a ride over through East Stoneham to Cushman Pond, and over to Lake Kezar Pond for cranberries.



Monday, October 13, 1958

A nice day but cold. I washed, churned. Took some colored snaps in the morning.









Tuesday, October 14, 1958

Another nice day but cold. I cleaned up the house, cooked a little. Miss Kalwall called. I can have a baby to board. She is coming to see me. Betty up to Delores in eve. Billie and I called. Very cold last night.

A nice day. I washed. Delores called in p.m. I churned.



Wednesday, October 8, 1958

Another nice day. Delores came up. She and I went down and called on Lorraine, also down to (?) Burmy’s. In p.m. I cleaned up the house and ironed. Lloyd and Fern up in evening. They cut up meat.



Thursday, October 9, 1958

A nice day. I was busy all day. In evening Fern and Lloyd came up, they cut up a quarter of beef.



Friday, October 10, 1958

A very nice day. I cooked, done up the work. Washed floors. Cleaned up the porch after they got done from cutting up the meat. Delores called. Mama came home from Ferns. Bill and I to town.



Saturday, October 11, 1958

A nice day. On the much cooler side. I did up the work. Went to town in p.m. with Billie. Raymond here for supper. Kennard called in p.m. I cooked today.

October 2 - 6, 1958



Thursday, October 2, 1958

Frost. A very nice day. I washed. Rosalie and children called and Holly. Also Dawn. I took care of plants outside. Billie cleaned out henhouse. I cleaned Mama’s bedroom. Bill, Billie helped to move Dawn’s mothers refrigerator. No school today.



Friday, October 3, 1958

A nice day. Warm. I cooked. Betty up to Dawn’s. Billie sold Jersey cow. To town in late p.m. Fern, Lloyd called.



Saturday, October 4, 1958

A nice day. Betty to Fryeburg Fair with Dawn. I cooked, churned. In p.m. Bill came home, we dressed rest of the old hens. Lloyd came up in eve. They cut up rest of beef.



Sunday, October 5, 1958

A nice day. Cool and windy. Bill and I went to Portland and got Ken and Delores. I went up to Waterford with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Wrote my letters.



Monday, October 6, 1958

A very nice day. Kind of cool. I went to your mess with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis to Hilda’s. Letter from Adair’s, also a snapshot of JEFFREY.

It finally got cleared off in p.m., sunny but cooler. Today they got the furnace down cellar. Ervin helped, also Raymond and Bobby. Raymond here for dinner. Mama over to Blanche’s for the day. Betty to game in p.m., dance in evening.



Monday, September 29, 1958

A good day, cold. I washed. Mama down to Ferns. No fire here, real cold.

Nanny used a green ink pen in much of her 1958 diary - which faded. Many of her words were very hard to read and over the years have been re-written by her or other family members.




Tuesday, September 30, 1958


A nice day. Still on the cool side. I ironed. Dawn called. We went over and got Rayor stove and set it up in kitchen. Warmer. Kennie and Dot came up tonight. They decided not to tackle rest of the furnace. Raymond over tonight. Chet called too.



Wednesday, October 1, 1958


A rainy day. Bill didn’t work. He went to see Lowell. In eve, went to see Lin Hill. He came up tonight. He is going to put furnace in and hook it all up for heat., water, etc. Lloyd, Betty, Billie and I went to get our pullets at Trues from Lovell.
