The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 28 - August 1, 1958



Monday, July 28, 1958

Rain again. I washed. Betty up to Dawn’s all day. Rayburn and Joan and Karen called in evening. Sally and girls called in p.m. Minnie and baby coming home tomorrow. Aunt Linnie not too good. I called on her in evening. Bill began on the door. Lumber came from L.C. Andrews.



Tuesday, July 29, 1958 Dorothea 21 today

I churned. Rained. I washed up all the floors downstairs. It cleared about noon. Bill made or finished new barn door. Kennard called. Mama down to Ferns. Minnie and baby came home today. Hope Dorothea had a happy day.



Wednesday, July 30, 1958

Came off hot today. I cleaned at Mrs. Rushmore’s. Bill shingled after supper. Also went over to Aunt Ava’s and fixed lawn more. I went up to see Minnie and baby.



Thursday, July 31, 1958

Warm in a.m. Cloudy in p.m. Cold East wind blowing. I cleaned up the house, done a little cooking.



Friday, August 1, 1958 Set out Trees

A very nice day. I churned, cooked some. Blanche, her sister-in-law and children called. Betty and I went and got little maple trees way down in the woods today and set out. One for Jeffrey Dennis Adair, one for William Lloyd Deming. Lassie and Penny went too. To town in p.m.
