The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 12 - 15, 1958



Saturday, July 12, 1958

Cloudy and showers. Picked berries. Done up the housework. Dawn up and picked berries too. Billie and I up and called on Ilan. Betty and Norma to Carnival in p.m. Betty won a puppy.

The puppy Betty saved from an abusive home - she told her folks she WON it at the carnival.



Sunday, July 13, 1958

A very nice hot day. Had Yates up with their guest the McCammon’s for a cookout, very good time. Picked a lot of berries today. Rayburn’s family and mother & father in law called. Also Kennard. Bob and Blanche.

Monday, July 14, 1958 Trouble in Middle East

A very nice day. I washed, cleaned up the house. Clouded up tonight and rain. Betty and Norma up to Kennard’s to take the puppy out. Bill and Billie helped Raymond and Kennard to get hay in. I wrote letters and sent Jeffrey Dennis card & money from Gramp and Gram Crook.



Tuesday, July 15, 1958

Cloudy in a.m., some sunshine in p.m. Cleaned up the house. Ironed, got ready for the McCammon’s. Here for supper. Had ice cream and birthday cake. They spent evening. Norma called her folks. Bill sent beans to Es. Mama’s day 78 years.
