The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 2 - 7, 1958



Saturday, August 2, 1958

A very nice day. This is been a very nice day. I worked all day around the house. Billie and Chet haying till late. Last night Brud’s folks came.



Sunday, August 3, 1958 Hot

Sunny. Billie had to work. Bill worked on barn clapboards and shingling. Kennard called in a.m. Billie awful late getting home. Haying.

Monday, August 4, 1958

Cloudy, showers. I washed. Betty over to Aunt Linnie’s and up to Aunt Ava’s with Penny. Barbra Autio called me this morning.



Tuesday, August 5, 1958

I ironed. A very nice day. Bill worked on back of barn in evening.





Wednesday, August 6, 1958

Jeffrey Dennis Adair one month old today. I worked for Mrs. Rushmore. A very nice day. Got a letter from the Adair family. I went up to Lil’s in evening, got string beans. Betty went blueberrying with Dawn.



Thursday, August 7, 1958

Another nice day. I cleaned up the house, cooked. Got out the lawn chairs. Betty down to Ferns. And in a unknown way, Betty gave me a surprise birthday party. Kennard, Delores, Blanche, Bob, Dawn, Steve, Janice, Fern, Lloyd, Uncle Os, Raymond, Uncle Lewis, Aunt Ava, Mama, Bill, Billie, Kay and Betty. A nice time. It was a surprise too.
