The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 26 - 29, 1974


Wednesday, June 26, 1974 CHRISTIE GONE ONE WEEK

A miserable day. I went down to Betty’s. We cleaned up her house in a.m. and in p.m. cleaned her cellar. Bill hauled the mess to the dump. Betty washed it all down. It looks very nice. Cathy went home today. Today at three Christie gone one week. We still miss her. She isn’t suffering anymore.



Thursday, June 27, 1974

Cloudy most of the day. It did clear in the p.m. I went down to Betty’s for a little while. Lloyd was up today. In p.m. Betty took me to town to shop.



Friday, June 28, 1974

A nice sunny and warm day after the fog cleared up. I went down to Betty’s early this morning to stay while she took Carmen to the dentist. Carmen stayed over to Zenya’s last night. This has been a beautiful day. Betty, all kids, with Zenya  and I went to a garage sale at 2 Pleasant Street, the Osbourne Dave’s home. We bought a few articles. I didn’t do much today except regular work. I went down to Betty’s in p.m. It has been a beautiful day. I did some washing. Lawrence came and got the bull tonight. Also took Walt’s heifer home. Bill painted rest of the barn.



Saturday, June 29, 1974 RAIN

Another miserable day. It rained all day. Bill and Billie done a few things at the barn. In p.m. Billie went with Lawrence. Kim up here today. I baked beans, made rolls and a cake. Hortons out riding.

June 23 -25, 1974






Sunday, June 23, 1974 BRUD AND VERNA

It was a partly cloudy day. I worked in a.m. etc. We made two batches of sandwiches. Dorothea came and helped. We all got ready and went to Brud and Verna’s wedding anniversary party given by their three children. It was at Bartlett Inn on Route 302 W. Bridgton. It was very nice. Betty, Walt and children, Dorothea, David and me. There was about 65 or 70 friends and relatives. Bill and Billie finished the doors and windows on the barn.



Monday, June 24, 1974 Bill painted the barn

A very nice day. I washed and washed windows. Was down to Betty’s and did washing for her and washed dishes etc. She and Kim went down to Dawn’s. Carmen and Cathy didn’t know what to do, they played cards and games. Esther over here this evening. Kim also and she stayed all night. Bill painted the barn one half today. It looks better painted. Carmen up here tonight for a little while.



Tuesday, June 25, 1974

Cloudy and very windy, on the cool side. Last night Walt’s black angus heifer got out and came up here to this pasture. It was noisy all night. Ebony and the cows and calves bellowing etc. I did some washing, they dried pretty good. Bill worked some in the barn. Kim stayed up here tonight for all night. I was down to Betty’s.

A fair day. I washed, done some odds and end jobs. Christie gone one day at 2:50 this afternoon. I have traveled to see her where her bed was many times today. I could see her in my mind. Miss her. She was such a nice dog. Miss her so much. I babysat down to Betty’s tonight. She and Walt out for supper.


Friday, June 21, 1974 MOVE HENS UP

A cloudy day, on the cool side in the forenoon. I done regular work, washed, put clothes on clothes (?) hoss because my line broke. Lloyd up. Betty and Walt down to Dawn’s today. Carmen and Kim each had a friend come to visit them and to go as their guest to Storyland with the Methodist Sunday School class. Demings and Hortons called. Tonight we moved our hens up from Betty’s. First night a living creature stayed in the new barn. We miss Christie.



Saturday, June 22, 1974 HAIR SET



A nice day. I baked beans, done up regular work, washed floors. Went over to June’s, got my hair set for tomorrow. In p.m. had the regular showers. Bill and Billie worked on the barn. Betty and I went looking at barn sale articles. Betty got a few pieces of china. Carmen, Kim and Zak went with their friends and the Sunday School went up to Storyland for the day. They all had a very good time. Got very tired though.

A very miserable day. Betty, Kim, Zak and I went to Portland and Scarborough. Kimmy did some shopping. She had such a good time. Dorothea went with us. It was cloudy but it didn’t rain. Carmen stayed home because she had cold and a slight attack of asthma. Bill worked on the barn. Betty got two cats, one a small kitten.

Tuesday, June 18, 1974 Christie very sick

Well after a little rain it cleared today. I washed, made a lemon pie. Defrosted my refrigerator. Betty called. Kimmy, Lloyd. Betty down to Sandy Smith. In evening Hortons called. Bill worked on the barn doors today and Billie helped tonight. Today Christie has been very weak and hasn’t eaten a thing. I call Dr. Gauger. He is coming tomorrow.

Wednesday, June 19, 1974 CHRISTIE CROOK WENT TODAY 9 years and 8 months

Today Dr. Charles Gauger put Christie to sleep at 2:50 PM. She was very weak and very sick. She has been poorly for the past month and over. She has been with us for nine years eight months. She was a very good, kind, gentle and faithful dog. We all loved her and glad to have had her with us for so long. It doesn’t seem possible she has gone. We miss her and always will. She had a good home with us and it was just like one of the family to lose her.
It has been a very nice day. Bill got a lot done on the barn, ceiling and doors. Dawn has been down to Betty’s today. Kim up here and Zak. Carmen gone to her friends for the PM. I got the house all cleaned and disinfected after Christie went.

June 14 - 16, 1974


Friday, June 14, 1974 Kennard 73rd birthday, 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF KEN AND DELORES, LAST DAY OF SCHOOL, A NICE DAY

A nice day. I went down to Betty’s. We picked the kids clothes over and the chest. Joy and her girls called at Betty. About 10:30 AM the girls came home from school for the beginning of their summer vacation. Carmen will go into the sixth grade next year. Kimberly the third and Zak in kindergarten. In p.m. Betty, Zak, Kim and I went to town. Betty down to Ferns and painted porch rail. Bill got one end of the barn done. Brud, Verna and Cathy came tonight to help Ken and Delores celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Delores said she wasn’t able to do anything, she has been poorly.



Saturday, June 15, 1974

A fair day. They worked on the barn. Got the rooms petitioned and tie up sheathed. I did a dite of cooking, cleaned up etc. Betty up and Walt. Kim was up. Esther called and Lloyd. Carmen had a good time playing with Cathy all day and then they all went over to Verna’s brother’s for a cookout in evening.



Sunday, June 16, 1974 RAIN ALL DAY

Very heavy rains today all day. It was Father’s Day. Bill got T-shirts, a dress shirt, Eagle and a $10. We went down to Betty’s for a chicken lunch or dinner, very good. The Thomases also. They got a lot more done in the barn today.
