The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 25 - 27, 1974

Thursday, April 25, 1974

A pretty good day, sunny but very cold. I went down to Betty’s. We cleaned her bedroom closet and bureau draws. Then she, Bill, Zak and I went to Portland and got the plywood for the roof of the barn. Came home, got supper then went down to Fern’s in evening. Betty got some names on some photos Fern gave her.

Cold and partly cloudy. It cleared up in PM. Betty went to Portland with Lloyd and Fern and Esther. Lloyd down for a check up. Dorothea and Jeff called and was here for a long visit. I was very glad to see them both. Jeff has a nice car, it rides very good. He is very pleased with it. The town fixed the culvert in Walt’s yard. Bill did the work scraping at and smoothing it over.

A beautiful clear hot day. It was very cold and frost on the ground when we got up. It soon warmed up. I done up my regular work. Washed, down to Betty’s a minute to see the nice photos of Zak. They came today. I cleaned the lower cupboards and draws in the kitchen. Also bathroom closet and draws. Billie did his fencing and most of Walt’s they got done. Bill got a load of Bedding. Billie went with Lawrence in p.m. Betty and Walt rode the horses today and went down to Dawn’s in p.m. to help on the barn.
