The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 3- 5, 1974

Monday, June 3, 1974

A quite nice day. I washed, defrosted my refrigerator, got ready and went to Portland with Betty to shop. Dorothea went with us. Today we heard that Barbara Gammon’ to s youngest son Steve was found dead by exhaust from a car. He and a girlfriend. Christie better today. Bill got quite a lot done on the barn.

Tuesday, June 4, 1974 PERMANENT

A very nice day for a change. On the hot side and sunny. I went over to June’s and got my permanent in the forenoon. In p.m. Betty, Zak and I went to the school program at the town hall. Carmen and Kimberly were in it. It was very good. A big crowd. In p.m. Walt and Bill got the rafters all on the barn. In evening they mowed lawns and moved the chicken coop.

Wednesday, June 5, 1974 HOT HOT HOT

This is been a very hot day. Gardens took a jump and have grown good. I was at Betty’s today. I did some work and her washing while she did her lawns. It was too much for her in the heat and she nearly passed out. Dr. Andrear came and gave Ebony her shot today. Betty made a flower garden. Bill did some odds and end jobs on the barn today and tonight he and Billie put some plywood onto the roof. Betty did her trimming after supper. I washed some windows and cleaned the screens and Billie put them on. Christie is still better, eats some.
