The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 15 - 18, 1974

Friday, March 15, 1974 Pappa’s and Blanche’s birthdays

A beautiful day. I done regular work. I went down town shopping. Washed in PM a few things.

Saturday, March 16, 1974

Today we got snow and rain. A miserable day. I didn’t do anything except regular work. I baked beans, made a cake and rolls. In late p.m. I’m going down to Betty’s to stay with the kids. They are going down to Dawn’s. Billie down to Fern’s and went with Lawrence. Bill here all day again, nothing to do.

Sunday, March 17, 1974

A very miserable day, but it cleared late in PM. I done regular work. Made a rhubarb pie and some tarts. Finished looking at all my magazines, papers etc. Betty and Walt down to Fern’s for dinner. And the children. Keith called, he and Billie went up to Conway to Dr. Hussey’s,  VMD, big cattle farm. I got home from Betty’s at about three this morning. They got into the ditch. It was very bad traveling.

Monday, March 8, 1974 very nice day

It was cloudy in a.m. but cleared away after a little while and was a very nice day. I done up my regular work. Down to Betty’s. We went to Sebago and back, then in p.m. to Norway. She got groceries and grain. Bill home all day. Lloyd to the doctors. Dr. trimmed the bad place on his heel.
