The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 3 - 5, 1974

Wednesday, April 3, 1974 a beautiful day

A beautiful day. This is been a very nice warm and sunny day. I got my clothes out early. Went down to Betty’s, we cleaned the bureau draws in Carmen’s room. Then it was so nice and warm, we cleaned the shed chamber. My ankle quite lame and stiff. I slipped outside this morning. Checks came today, we had the increase today. What a help that will be. Another increase coming in July.

Thursday, April 4, 1974

Well, back to cloudy miserable days again. No change till end of week. Anyway, we went to Portland and Westbrook, done Kim’s birthday shopping. Dorothea went with us. Had a good time. Brought home a Kentucky Fried Chicken for supper. Billie had us pick up one for Chet and Lil, it being Lil’s birthday. In evening Esther came over.

Friday, April 5, 1974

A miserable day weatherwise. I went down to Betty’s early, came home, ironed. Dawn called at Betty’s. They went down to Kitty Linscott’s to see her goats. Zak stayed here. In p.m. Betty took me to town and then we went to Norway and got rest of Kimmy’s gifts. We wrapped them. I came home, got supper. Billie to Norway and got seeds, fertilizer etc. Then he and Bill took truck and took Billie up to get milk. It rained hard this p.m. Dawn called here with Betty today. Carmen had two invitations out tonight, one at Sally Clark’s slumber party and one over to Zenya’s. She went to Zenya’s.
