The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 23 -25, 1974

Sunday, June 23, 1974 BRUD AND VERNA

It was a partly cloudy day. I worked in a.m. etc. We made two batches of sandwiches. Dorothea came and helped. We all got ready and went to Brud and Verna’s wedding anniversary party given by their three children. It was at Bartlett Inn on Route 302 W. Bridgton. It was very nice. Betty, Walt and children, Dorothea, David and me. There was about 65 or 70 friends and relatives. Bill and Billie finished the doors and windows on the barn.

Monday, June 24, 1974 Bill painted the barn

A very nice day. I washed and washed windows. Was down to Betty’s and did washing for her and washed dishes etc. She and Kim went down to Dawn’s. Carmen and Cathy didn’t know what to do, they played cards and games. Esther over here this evening. Kim also and she stayed all night. Bill painted the barn one half today. It looks better painted. Carmen up here tonight for a little while.

Tuesday, June 25, 1974

Cloudy and very windy, on the cool side. Last night Walt’s black angus heifer got out and came up here to this pasture. It was noisy all night. Ebony and the cows and calves bellowing etc. I did some washing, they dried pretty good. Bill worked some in the barn. Kim stayed up here tonight for all night. I was down to Betty’s.
