The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 23 - 26, 1974

Saturday, March 23, 1974

Partly cloudy, but it cleared off mid-forenoon. I washed. Also I done regular work. Made bread and rolls. Washed windows, washed floor and ironed and mended. Billie didn’t do much except his chores. He went down to Lawrence’s but he wasn’t at the slaughterhouse. In p.m. I went with Betty and Carmen down to Gorham.

Sunday, March 24, 1974 CALF

I took my bath, done regular work. Done a little mending etc. This morning they found a premature calf born. We feel sorry. Hope the cow will be okay. It was down to Walt’s. Billie’s cow or heifer he bought of Joe McDonald. Kimmy up here today. Carmen up to Kathy’s. She came down this weekend.

Monday, March 25, 1974

A beautiful day. I washed, clothes dried good. I done my regular work, went down to Betty’s and helped her. She has a very bad lame back and shoulder. I also went to town in a.m. I came home, got lunch and got my roast pork supper to going. Fern and Lloyd were here for supper. Roast pork, shell beans, boiled onions, potatoes, cranberry sauce, hot biscuits, coffee, chocolate cake with a boiled frosting.

Tuesday, March 26, 1974

Down to Betty’s when Bill went down to do chores. She took Zak to school. She and I did up her work. Bonnie down there with her for a visit. Bill and Betty to town and to Harrison in p.m. I did a big ironing.
