The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 6 - 9, 1974


Thursday, June 6, 1974

It was quite cloudy in the forenoon. But it cleared about noon. Kimberly’s grade went to the animal farm up to Rumford today. Zak’s grade had a picnic at Knight’s Hill today. Then Betty came up here. Lloyd up here today.



Friday, June 7, 1974 Root Beer

A beautiful day. Not too hot and not too cool. I did rest of my windows and washed. To town at noon. Down to Betty’s and we made the first batch of root beer for this year. Lloyd called today. Kim Mushgrave called at Carmen’s tonight to stay all night. Bill did a lot of the barn today. Minnie called and we talked a little while out at the new barn.



Saturday, June 8, 1974 HOT

A very nice hot day and sunny.They, Bill, Billie, Betty and Walt worked on the barn. They got one side shingled. It was too hot in p.m. and had to finish it in evening. Carmen and her friend went fishing down to the brook. They rode Ebony. Kim up here in p.m. Lloyd came up in a.m. He and Fern in p.m.



Sunday, June 9, 1974 HOT

A beautiful day, hot and sunny yet some breeze. They finished shingling the barn roofs. Also a happy surprise, Dorothea and Jeffrey called on us. Betty came up with Walt, she helped on the barn roof too. Betty brought up some Frankfurts and rolls. We had a cookout. Dorothea, Kim and Zak and I played croquet. This was children’s day at Sunday School. Kim got a Bible, pin and certificate also a flower. Zak and Carmen did too except the Bible. They were all dressed and looked very nice. Esther called today. Bill had to get more shingles for the barn.
