The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 27 - 30, 1974


Wednesday, March 27, 1974

A beautiful day. I went down to Betty’s. Zak not feeling good. I came home, washed. I made a lemon meringue pie. Made some bread. Tonight Esther and Cliff came over for supper and evening. I had a fried ham supper. Bill sitting around all day, doing nothing as usual. I washed windows today.



Thursday, March 28, 1974

 It cleared in early a.m. Betty and Dawn went looking for sheep, pigs etc. I went down and done up her work and then brought Zak up here for the rest of the day. We got up here about 11 AM. Zak don’t feel very good. I done a lot of odds and end jobs. In evening I went down to Fern’s.



Friday, March 29, 1974 Zak has cold

A very nice day. I was down to Betty’s while she went to Portland and Westbrook. Zak still has a bad cold. I was down there until about 1:30 then I came home, washed, washed windows, made a pudding for dessert etc. etc. It was a good drying day. Jeff called in evening. He has his license now. He had bought a brand-new electric guitar.



Saturday, March 30, 1974

A partly cloudy day. I done my regular work. Did a dite of cooking, baked beans. Kim came up and called a minute with her goat. Billie went with Lawrence. Bill didn’t do much as usual, just smoked.
