The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 19 - 22, 1968


Friday, July 19, 1968 MUGGY

The worst hottest day of all, the humidity is so heavy it’s hazy. Humidity is awful. I worked at Mrs. Dearborn’s today. Came home, washed and finished my housework. Bill went to work at 5 AM, home at 2:30 because of the extreme heat.



Saturday, July 20, 1968

A nice day, breeze good all day. Billie and I picked peas. Bill painted. We also picked cukes. Fern up for supper. She and I shelled peas. It got real cool. I put a rinse on my hair. Bill and I to town.



Sunday, July 21, 1968

Cool. A very nice day. I froze peas and string beans. Got dinner. Bill and I picked string beans and cukes. Mrs. Dearborn called and paid me. She and her sister looked at the house. Bill and I took a nice ride. Fern Lloyd called. Brud and kids. Bill painted some more. $12.



Monday, July 22, 1968 a nice day

A very nice day. I went to town first thing with Fern and Lloyd. I came home, did my wash and regular work. In evening Mr. and Mrs. Doney called also Norm and Barbara Stanford. Billie picked a lot of cukes and some peas.

July 15 - 18, 1968


Monday, July 15, 1968 MAMA’S BIRTHDAY

Clear and hot. Kind of foggy and hot when we got up, it soon cleared. Mama would have been 88 years today. Think for her often and still miss her. She is happy, I know. I washed, cleaned up the house, did the refrigerator. Bill Stanford called.



Tuesday, July 16, 1968 HOT over 100 today
 
I washed again. Not much to do when it is so hot. Stanford boys called. Called at Aunt Ava’s.





Wednesday, July 17, 1968 80+90 HOT

We had string beans tonight. I picked greens and lettuce and took over to Minnie and Mrs. Stanford’s. Lloyd, Fern called. Lloyd got some greens. Fern went to hospital for checkup. Not much anyone can do when it is so awful hot. 80 and 90 to 100°. Had a shower, it helped the garden a lot. I done regular work, washed. Bill and I down town, I got my hair rinse. Took some greens down to Jean’s.




Thursday, July 18, 1968

Continued very HOT. I picked peas, string beans, and cukes. Dorothea and Jeff came up today. I was so glad to see them. I gave her some peas, greens, cukes and greens. Jeff is sick today, the heat I think. Dorothea and Jeff went over to Joe and Ruth’s cottage lot on Woods Pond to swim. Dorothea called at Lorraine’s today also. Bill and Billie mowed grass tonight. Had first cukes.

July 11 - 14, 1968


Thursday, July 11, 1968

Another HOT day. I done up work, washed. Billie, kids and I over to Fryeburg, Brownfield and Denmark. It was awful hot. In p.m. Carmen went swimming down to the lake with Joy and kids. Had some Italian sandwiches for supper.

 

Friday, July 12, 1968

Another hot day. Billie and I with Ken and Dolores went to Concord and took Carmen and Kim home. We had a good time, they were glad to see the kids home again. We had a good time. Had a nice trip, came home, stopped at Brownfield. Got Italian sandwiches. Fern and Lloyd were here, we had them for supper. Very HOT. Norman and boys haying.



Saturday, July 13, 1968

Another hot day. Not quite as hot as yesterday though. I done up regular work. Billie done a few odds and end jobs around here. I didn’t baked beans today, it was too hot.



Sunday, July 14, 1968 green peas

Another nice hot day. I didn’t get up until late 9 AM. I got breakfast, did up the work. Bill painted on the house. Billie and I picked over first mess of peas. Norm and Barbara Stanford called. Dorothea and family came up. We gave her some greens and lettuce. Jeff not going home until Christmas week.

July 8 - 10, 1968


Monday, July 8, 1968

This hot weather is very good. We are so glad to have it. I did a big wash. Thena called. I talked on the phone. Billie worked for Lawrence. This will be his last day. Joy and girls here for a little while in p.m. Fern and Lloyd here in evening. Sat outside in evening. Watch Norm and boys do their haying. Billie hauled home a load of hay for himself.



Tuesday, July 9, 1968 HOT

Very hot all day. I washed, done up my housework. Ironed. Billie and I cleaned up his car. In late p.m. Betty came with the kids to stay for a couple days. Billie all done working for Lawrence and was home today. He went to town, got some cold cuts, strawberries etc. I made a salad, we ate out. Betty and girls were here, had Fern and Lloyd up. The Stanford boys were up in PM. Norm and boys got more hay in tonight. I like Carmen and Kim’s hair cuts very much.



Wednesday, July 10, 1968

It was hot but we had a heavy rain shower. Joy over, brought some kid dresses. I washed them. Billie up to Chet’s doing some painting in milk room. Went back after supper and finished it. Kids are good. Fern, Lloyd called in evening. Kids and I walked up to Kennard’s after supper.

July 5 - 7, 1968


Friday, July 5, 1968

Sunny and mild. A very nice day. I went to Norway with Joy. Done grocery shopping. Came home, done up the housework. Washed. Bill and I to town and down to Gordon’s tenting area. Fern, Lloyd up in evening. Billie worked till late.



Saturday, July 6, 1968 Jeff 10 today

Partly cloudy. I got up early. Got my work done. Billie and I walked around the fence. Billie took me to town. Billie working for Lawrence. Bill worked on the front doorsteps in p.m. He mowed lawns after supper. Fern, Lloyd up in eve. Dennis called to talk with Jeff. Jeff wasn’t here so Bill and I took the message down. I cleaned the car.



Sunday, July 7, 1968

Bill finished working on the steps. It was clear in a.m. then got cloudy, rained some then cleared and got real hot. I done up my work. Finished or polished the outside of the car. It looks very nice. Billie didn’t work today. He cleaned up around. Fern, Lloyd up in PM. In late evening before dark Bill and I took a ride in his cleaned and polished car.
