The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 10 - 12, 1968


Friday, May 10, 1968 BILL’S VACATION BEGAN TODAY

Partly cloudy day, some rain skuds. Bill home first day of his vacation. He fixed the pipe (water) down in the well. Cleaned the sand and grit out of the faucet. We went to town. Lewis brought the car back. It is in very good condition. Bill polished it all in good shape. Got a place ready around the outside of the breezeway to plant flowers. Minnie called and brought us a big mess of the green. Betty and family came about 8 PM. Carmen’s arm in a cast. Kim all dressed up real cute.

Saturday, May 11, 1968

A very nice day. I got up early, got the beans to cooking. Made two pies and one cake. Cooked a roast of pork. Did up the work. I made rolls. Betty and Walt to town, down to Fern’s, over to Aunt Ava’s. Billie worked at Chet’s. We had Fern up for supper.



Sunday, May 12, 1968 RAIN

It has rained all day. I cooked a chicken dinner. Betty, Walt, two kids were here also Dorothea and her family. Had a nice Mother’s Day. Got a lot of nice and useful gifts. Bob called today also. Fern and Lloyd were here. Mrs. Adair and Dennis called on the phone this evening.
