The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 23 - 25, 1968


Sunday, June 23, 1968 Got Pig

Another mixed up day. I got up about 8:30, got breakfast. Done up my work. Billie went down and got Dot. She came up and spent the day. Fern, Lloyd called. And later the Dave Thomas family called. Rayburn came up after Dot. It was quite sunny in p.m. Billie down to Casco and around with Lawrence. He brought home some native strawberries from Bucknell’s over to Denmark. We got a new pig today.



Monday, June 24, 1968

A partly cloudy day and with rain showers. I got my washing done. Randy came over, also Minnie. Fern Lloyd called. I’ve been busy all day. Done regular work etc. Betty called, all have been sick and still are. Carmen has asthma.



Tuesday, June 25, 1968

Another one of those mixed up weather days. It cleared so I could get my clothes in. Minnie called. Randy went to school today for summer session. I called the principle for her. Joy called. She had trouble with her pump etc. I got the things down from up in the shed chamber. The bull went tonight.
