The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 15 - 18, 1968

Monday, July 15, 1968 MAMA’S BIRTHDAY

Clear and hot. Kind of foggy and hot when we got up, it soon cleared. Mama would have been 88 years today. Think for her often and still miss her. She is happy, I know. I washed, cleaned up the house, did the refrigerator. Bill Stanford called.

Tuesday, July 16, 1968 HOT over 100 today

I washed again. Not much to do when it is so hot. Stanford boys called. Called at Aunt Ava’s.

Wednesday, July 17, 1968 80+90 HOT

We had string beans tonight. I picked greens and lettuce and took over to Minnie and Mrs. Stanford’s. Lloyd, Fern called. Lloyd got some greens. Fern went to hospital for checkup. Not much anyone can do when it is so awful hot. 80 and 90 to 100°. Had a shower, it helped the garden a lot. I done regular work, washed. Bill and I down town, I got my hair rinse. Took some greens down to Jean’s.

Thursday, July 18, 1968

Continued very HOT. I picked peas, string beans, and cukes. Dorothea and Jeff came up today. I was so glad to see them. I gave her some peas, greens, cukes and greens. Jeff is sick today, the heat I think. Dorothea and Jeff went over to Joe and Ruth’s cottage lot on Woods Pond to swim. Dorothea called at Lorraine’s today also. Bill and Billie mowed grass tonight. Had first cukes.
