The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 19 - 21, 1968

Sunday, May 19, 1968

Partly cloudy, not much sunshine. I got up about 8 AM. Made bread, pie, baked a shoulder (smoked). Went down to the Cemetery with Betty and Walt, Fern and Lloyd were there. Carmen went with them. Betty and Walt went and got some lilacs and put on the graves, also two plants. They took Aunt Ava for a ride. Billie and Carmen called at Stanfords. Billie down country with Lawrence. Bill worked in the garage cleaning the ground all out and smoothed it off. Carmen going home today.

Monday, May 20, 1968 RAIN

I missed Carmen all day. I cleaned up the house, vacuum, dusted etc. I looked over some things in my desk. No one here. I talked or made some phone calls. Lawrence called after supper. He and Billie got the cow down to Stanford’s, also took one of Chet’s to pasture over to Paris.

Tuesday, May 21, 1968

Well today it cleared off quite cloudy in a.m. On the cool side. I did a big wash, done up my housework. D Thomas Sr. called. I called on Minnie. After supper Bill and Billie worked on the flower garden wall around the breezeway. Randy called. I did my ironing after supper. Still on the cold side. Fern’s back still lame.
