The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 5 - 7, 1968

Wednesday, June 5, 1968

A nice day, very hot. We got up early, about eight at Betty’s. Got ready, done up the housework. Left there about 10 AM, went out to the stores to get a gift for Jeff. Couldn’t find it. We left for home at 1 PM. Lloyd told us the awful news of Bobby Kennedy. He was shot and wounded last night during a victory celebration in California after winning the primaries there. It was so good to get back home. A Brand-New one. Betty and Carmen stayed till after supper than a little car trouble so didn’t get home very early. Bill and Billie and Christie was glad I was home I guess. Kim came to stay for a rest.

Hot. A very nice day, really hot. It seems good to sail into the housework again. I washed, done up regular work and cleaned up the rugs, dusted etc. Kim had a good long nap today. She is real cute. We love having her here. Robert Kennedy died early this morning of shotgun wounds in the neck, head from an assailant’s gun. Bill got the breezeway steps done.

A nice warm day. I did a dite of washing, cleaned up the housework or general work. Kim and I walked down to Barbara Stanford’s. I ironed, washed and figured bills etc. Got supper ready. Bill took me to town before supper. Kim went with us. Dorothea and Jeff came to stay all night. They had two chickens and the dog. We was glad to see them. We called at Dave Thomas Sr. later in the evening. The Horton family came to get Kim.
