The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 15 - 17, 1968


Monday, April 15, 1968 Rain

It rained hard all day. I sanded Billie’s room and varnished it. I painted closets and smoothed up some walls. Bill painted our bedroom walls tonight pink. I went to town with Fern and Lloyd.



Tuesday, April 16, 1968 got a different car 1962 Ford

It has been cold today, quite windy. What a mess this house has been today. I cleaned my bedroom and Billie’s today. I varnished in living room and finished cleaning the furniture etc. and put it on the porch. Bill got a 1962 card today. A Mercury. A very nice clean car. Bought it at Caroll Welch. A man from N J Fox came and fixed the window. I talked with Betty today. Also they called me from Sears Roebuck, they are bringing the rugs tomorrow. Bill painted Billie’s bedroom walls green.



Wednesday, April 17, 1968 Rugs Came

A beautiful day. I did a big wash. I finished cleaning the living room. Washed windows on outside. I cleaned the kitchen stove all thoroughly. About 11:30 the rugs were delivered from Sears Roebuck of Portland. Cap Welch called. Kennard called. Carlton and family left early this morning for Montréal. It has been kind of warm. Bill painted kitchen second coat of paint tonight. I cleaned the electric stove.
