The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 16 - 18, 1968

Thursday May 16, 1968

A nice sunny day, not quite as warm as yesterday. I did a little washing. Fern, Lloyd called. Bill, Carmen and I went down to see Doney’s house. Then on down to South Bridgton to see about getting some bricks the flower bed. Came home, had lunch, took a ride over to Oxford to see about getting legs for the small bathroom sink. Back home through Norway and Waterford, got home in time to watch programs. After supper Bill and Carmen up to Bill Ridlon’s. Billie getting a haircut. I washed out my undergarments, got the clothes in. Fern had a real lame back today.

A miserable rainy day. I cleaned up the house. Washed and waxed my kitchen floor. Carmen watched TV. I got a few other jobs done. Went to town in evening with Bill. Carmen went with us. Bill back to work today after his weeks vacation. I ironed. Billie and Lawrence called at Stanfords' to see about the cow.

Cloudy and showery all day. We got up early and went to Auburn and Lewiston to do some shopping for me. Betty, Walt, Carmen and Kim, we had lunch at Goodwin’s at about one. I got two new dresses, corselets, panties and a few toilet articles. Came home, got Fern, got home about six. Had supper. Got the kids to bed, got a new bed for them.
