The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 27 - 29, 1968


Saturday, April 27, 1968

A cloudy dreary day and it rained. Billie worked for Lawrence in p.m. In a.m. he went to Norway and bought the garden seed, fertilizer and lime. Had the Rototiller fixed. Also got his fence posts and a pail for me and himself. Bill worked on the breezeway and varnished kitchen another coat. Fern up for supper. Rosalie called and bought car and truck.



Sunday, April 28, 1968

A very clear sunny day. I cleaned the bottom cupboards and put floor coverings on the floor. Bill varnished all the breezeway and finished the ceiling. Fern, Lloyd called in PM. Billie working for Lawrence. Car and truck went. Rose and Wally came early this morning and got car. Ilan took the truck.



Monday, April 29, 1968

A very nice sunny day, a dite windy. I did a big wash. Cleaned the cupboards in the kitchen, got all the dishes washed and brought up a box from down cellar. Jean came up a little while after supper. Bill and I took her home. Billie fence tonight. Bill harrowed the garden for first time.
