The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 8 - 11, 1968

Saturday, June 8, 1968

A very nice sunny day. I got up, got Bill off to work. Got breakfast. Billie took me to town. Kim went. Dorothea, Jeff and Carmen stayed here. I made some bread, baked beans. Kids got on Billie’s nerves today. A hard day. Randy here all day. Billie finished painting the fence.

A rainy miserable day. I went to town in a.m. I got up quite early, got beans started. Dorothea and Jeff got ready and left for home in a.m. Betty, Walt and Kim over to Aunt Ava’s. They brought them over to see the house. Uncle Lewis got in and around quite well. In late p.m. Fern and Lloyd called. Betty, Walt and children left for home about 6 PM. I hated to see Kim leave. I will miss her. She was happy to go and that is the best for her.

A cloudy and some rain today. I picked up and cleaned the house. Put some things away. Did a dite of cooking, a rhubarb pie. Cooked fried chicken for supper. Lloyd brought up a sign for Bill to paint. After supper Bill and I called at Dorothea’s and Jeff. She was getting Jeff’s clothes ready for his trip home. She had got a check. They were glad we came. Jeff was enjoying the new TV.
