The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 8 - 11, 1964



Friday, May 8, 1964

Churned for first time since last fall. Churned 2 1/4 pounds of butter. Began saving cream (?) Once a day milking. I went over the house today. In p.m. I got the Dahlia set out in front of the house. Betty fixed a fence to keep the dog out. Also Betty painted rose trellises and lounge chair frame. I went to town tonight.



Saturday, May 9, 1964

Rain at last. After two weeks without rain and several forest fires we’ve had a nice rain. Cooked, Betty and I to town and up on the Ridge to see the little house which I hope will be their home. Betty to movies. Billie bought the garden seed today. Carmen to town with Billie. Fern up for supper and evening. A bad tornado in Michigan near Dorothea and the Adair’s yesterday.



Sunday, May 10, 1964

It was sunny when we got up this morning. WORKED ALL DAY. It clouded up during the day at times with rain showers, but mostly sunny all day. On the cool side though. Cut up forward quarter of beef. Picked rocks, hauled out all the dressing and harrowed the garden. Ground and wrapped beef. Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava, Blanche here. Talk to Jeff and Dorothea, got watch, cake and money for permanent.



Monday, May 11, 1964

Cooler. I washed, not as big a wash today. On the cold side. They began on the timber again today. In evening I did my ironing. Bill wrote to George and Betty saying we were coming to visit them. Kay and husband called.

May 4 - 7, 1964



Monday, May 4, 1964

Did another very big wash. Clothes dried good. Picked dandelions. Got the separator cleaned up, after several months of not using it. Betty down town and got the car.



Tuesday, May 5, 1964 Separated milk for first time

Raw cold East wind. I went down and helped Fern in forenoon. Came home. Worked up in top of the barn. Picked some greens for supper. Betty and Bonnie went to Portland. She got me a beautiful wristwatch for Mother’s Day. I like it very much. I ironed after supper.



Wednesday, May 6, 1964

A nice day, on the warm side. I cleaned the back porch and grain room. A big forest fire up in Sweden. Betty up there with Louise. Louise here for supper. Aunt Ava’s birthday.



Thursday, May 7, 1964

A very HOT day. I finished up the bathroom and hallway. Cleaned up all the downstairs. Bert Chaplin here for supper. Billie, Bert, Dara and Red all gone up country smelting. Betty gone to town.

April 30 - May 3, 1964



Thursday, April 30, 1964

Another nice day, still on the cool side. I cleaned some cupboards, refrigerator and electric stove in kitchen. Betty to town and got the car. Billie gone smelting tonight upstate. Betty to the BHS concert. They began to haul some logs today but got stuck in the field. The beef heifer went today 375 pounds. 



Friday, May 1, 1964

Another very nice day. I finished cleaning my kitchen. What a job it has been. Billie got some nice smelts last night, had some for supper. Betty to town to get the groceries. I went over and helped Blanche move some furniture today. They didn’t work on the timber today.



Saturday, May 2, 1964

A beautiful day. I did a little cooking. We cleaned up the whole house. We cleaned the car, went down to see Eleanor Johns about working. Howard is sick. Fern up for supper. Billie up  country again tonight smelting. Mama gone just one month today.



Sunday, May 3, 1964

Another very nice day. Kind of a loafing and relaxing one. Billie got home from smelting this a.m. Done chores and slept till noon or 1 PM. No smelts. Betty and I to town and for Sunday ride while Carmen slept. Bill out checking on strawberry bed, garden etc. Watched game in p.m. Billie to town in p.m. Betty, Carmen and I picked dandelions. Had a chicken supper. Fern and Lloyd as guests. Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava, Holly and David called. Vose called.

April 26 - 29, 1964

A nice sunny day, first one in two weeks. Bill raked. Betty and I to town and around to the Cemetery. Bill and Mr. Vouch had a talk about the little house Betty has always wanted. Fern, Lloyd here, Blanche and Kennie and Dot. Billie cleaning up outside.



Monday, April 27, 1964

A beautiful warm sunny day. I did a very big wash and the clothes dried good. In evening we did the ironing. They began on the timber cutting today. Betty got a very nice letter and card from Mike. Betty may get the Vouch house.



Tuesday, April 28, 1964

Beautiful day. I cleaned the dining room, had to clean smelts for supper. Sally and two girls called. Betty worked on her house lot all day. Billie over to Phil Hunt’s camp smelting last night.



Wednesday, April 29, 1964

A very nice day. I began in the kitchen today. Done the ceiling and white paint. Betty took a walk down in the woods. Kind of an East wind.

Cloudy and rain. I worked in shed chamber. Got a new ironing board and cover. Done the ironing tonight. Bonnie up here in evening. Bill painted a ceiling for Fern and Lloyd. Awful cold up in the shed chamber today.

Another cloudy dreary miserable day. I finished the shed chamber. Betty gone, got tires on the car. Billie out for supper tonight. Betty down to Bonnie’s.



Friday, April 24, 1964

Another one of those dreary miserable days. I made some brownies this morning. Cleaned
 the living room. Betty to town to get groceries. Bert Chaplin here for supper. He and Billie and some of the guys over to Phil Hunt’s to go smelting.



Saturday, April 25, 1964

Another cloudy dreary day. Some rain and showers. I done up regular work. Cleaned buffet, cupboards and draws. Betty made some cookies. Betty off to town and Billie smelting. Fern up for supper and evening. We looked over some boxes.

A nice day, very warm. I washed Billie’s curtains and the living room ones. Fern, Lloyd called also Kennie and Dot. Betty off tonight, I don’t know where. Billie smelting. Bill did some raking. Blanche and Fern here till midnight. Got a nice letter from Esther.



Sunday, April 19, 1964

A nice day. Did up regular work. Cooked fricassee chicken. Kennie, Dot here, Bob, Blanche, Aunt Ava, Fern and Lloyd. Betty home tonight. Billie went smelting with Bob tonight.



Monday, April 20, 1964

Partly cloudy. I did a very big wash. Bob, Blanche over, brought over a mess of smelts. Betty home tonight. Very cold and raw. Bill raked lawns.



Tuesday, April 21, 1964

It was a very nice day. I did Billie’s room. Betty out most all day. She went to see about a place to live. Billie raked rest of the lawns, it looks clean. Betty off tonight again. Cleaned out my desk tonight.
