The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 - 12, 1964





Thursday, January 9, 1964

Cloudy all day. It began to snow early in p.m. Ken and Dolores called. Lloyd and Aunt Ava called also. To work at three. Billie came after me. Bill worked all night. Snow changed to rain about 9:30. Mild temperatures. Billie worked on his income tax in evening. Betty home all evening, enjoying her TV upstairs. She and Billie each had a flutter in their hearts tonight, they were kind to each other and talked. I hope to Lord it continues so I can keep on working to get to the top.



Friday, January 10, 1964

Warm in a.m. then wind began to blow, cold. Betty and I talked and discussed her future home. She got a letter from her husband. I worked on my bills etc. Rose and children called and Holly and her two. Very cold when I got home tonight. Grace sick a bed all day.



Saturday, January 11, 1964

On the cold side, cooked this a.m. To work early, had to call at Ferns and to see a house with Betty. To the store. Grace still sick in bed. Billie down to Lawrence’s. Bill worked till way past noon. Betty and I down to see that small house.



Sunday, January 12, 1964

Cold. Didn’t get up very early, cooked corned beef and cabbage for dinner. Aunt Ava called. Fern and Lloyd called. Bob and Blanche, Kennie and Dot. To work at three. Mama sick today. Billie had a Holstein heifer come today. She is new (?) They took the rhone cow back.
