The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 17 - 20, 1964 Betty and Carmen Fly to Ohio

Tuesday, March 17, 1964 Bett and Carmen

Today we took Betty and Carmen to Logan airport to leave for Cleveland Ohio. Barbara Conant Autio, Louise Richardson Valley and Bonnie Denning and I. Carmen made her first trip by air on a Astrojet plane. It was a snowy day. Cow is coming okay. Mama saw Carmen and Betty for the last time.

Wednesday, March 18, 1964

A nice beautiful day. I didn’t do much. Today relaxed some. Washed windows, figured bills. Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis called. I figured out some bills etc. I miss my baby so much and Betty. I pity her so much. I love her and miss her. Mama not too good. Betty and Carmen leaving has upset her. Didn’t talk to Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis.

Thursday, March 19, 1964

A very windy day. I did a very big wash. Picked up the house. Mama not too good. Still miss Carmen and Betty. I ironed some after supper. I washed windows in kitchen.

Friday, March 20, 1964 LETTER FROM BETTY

A beautiful day. Warmer, we did another small wash. Blanche finished the ironing of both washings. Mama real bad today. Breathing not at all good. Fern and Lloyd called. Aunt Ava called. Fern up in late p.m. in evening a little while. A nice letter from Betty, apparently all right she and Carmen.
