The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 2 - 5, 1964 Allie M. Smith Died

Thursday, April 2, 1964 MAMMA

Mama went today. Blanche called me at 3:45 AM, said Mama wasn’t very good. She was filled up and had difficulty breathing. Call Dr. Bishenoffberger at 4 AM. Mama lingered on until 12:30 and then the end was near. At 1:25 PM she breathed her last. Kennard, Delores, Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava, Blanche and Bob, Bill and I all were here. May God bless her and give her eternal happiness. We will always miss you. I lost someone today that no one ever can take her place.

Rain and snow. Dorothea, Betty and Carmen came today or late p.m. Milan and family came in late evening. We all went to the funeral parlor today and evening to visit with Mama. She looks so nice and really looked much younger. Her suffering is at end now. We all will remember her as she has been through life. It was nice seeing Dorothea again after over one year. Also Betty and Carmen. Fern up here, brought up supper etc. and worked.

Saturday, April 4, 1964 MAMMA’S FUNERAL

It cleared nice today, on the cool windy side. Funeral of Allie M. Smith at 2 PM. The funeral services of Allie Smith began. It was a sad sad affair for all of her family. She had a nice burial. Is happy. Came home, Harold Virgin and wife, Muriel and husband, Milan’s folks, Fern and Lloyd, Kennie, Dot, Wanda and Lorraine here. We had coffee and cake. Later had I baked beans supper. It don’t seem possible she is gone. I miss her so much, always will.

Love the ray of light shining on her grave
