The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 14 - 17, 1964



Friday, February 14, 1964

The most beautiful day. I finished the dining room. Blanche here all day. Fern, Lloyd called. Tonight I got paid only three dollars for milk from Hunt. Valentine came from grandson Jeff today. Mama quite sick.



Saturday, February 15, 1964

A very nice mild day. I washed living room and kitchen floors, living room windows. Alice, Doreen and Timmy called. I was so ashamed the house is so messy. They brought Carmen some new clothes and a toy horse. Blanche, Aunt Ava, Fern, Lloyd, Kennard, Kennie and Dot all here. I washed some windows. Timmy here all night. Esther called on phone . Mama not too good.



Sunday, February 16, 1964

Annual storm. A very stormy day. It began about 7 AM to snow. It came fast and the wind blowed very hard. Bill called to work about 8:30 to one Monday morning. Bob, Blanche called. Blanche had a party for Betty’s birthday. She had a good time. Mama weak. Billie here with Mama.



Monday, February 17, 1964 Betty Louise Crook Boutilier 21 years today

We did a big wash. Blanche here all day. Nothing much or exciting. Lloyd bought me some dog food. Dot Prescott called. Kennard, Ava, Kennie and Dot. Betty to town as usual at night.
