The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 25 - 28, 1964

Wednesday, March 25, 1964

Partly cloudy, some rain. I worked up in Betty’s room. Blanche and I went down to funeral parlor to see Grace. She looked nice, met the Simpsons. Fern, Lloyd here while we were gone. Mama still getting weaker. Nice letter from Betty.

Thursday, March 26, 1964

Cloudy dreary day. I finished doing Betty’s room. Cleaned up rest of the house. Mama not too good. I ironed curtains and Mama’s bedding. It stormed tonight. Bill called out. Aunt Ava here. Kennie and Dot at night. Rained hard today at times. Bill called out for storm (snow). Grace’s funeral today.

Mama had a bad day. She got nearly exhausted this morning during her bath etc. Then she was cold, her legs swollen and feet. Bad breathing. Fern and Lloyd here. I done just regular work. A nice sunny day cold and windy. Had snow last night. Mama bad tonight.

Saturday, March 28, 1964

A very nice day, not too cold, yet on the raw side. I done up the housework. Blanche upstairs to bed all morning. She didn’t sleep much last night. A Hereford heifer calf was born last night about 12 o’clock. Fern up here last night. Mama very very weak.
