The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 6 - 9, 1964

Thursday, February 6, 1964

Cliff’s birthday. A nice mild day. Blanche to Portland with Aunt Ava today. I was busy all day but didn’t do much. Tonight Billie and Dave took Christie and Possum Beauty over to the dog hospital at Norway, Dr. De Goosh for female operations. Poor critters. Christie and Beauty.

A big storm last night. About six or 8 inches a very heavy wet snow. Wind blowed hard. Bill out all night from 1:30. Got home about eight for his breakfast. Lloyd took me to work today. Missed Christie and Beauty. Carmen cried when I left her today. Only one more day to leave her. $49.

Saturday, February 8, 1964

Mama came home. A cloudy day, some snow flurries. Milan and a friend here. Blanche called. This is my last day to work. In p.m. Hospital called and said Mama could come home. She was so pleased but very tired and weak before she got here. Came near losing her, she collapsed. Christie and Beauty came home both bandaged. They both have been altered. Kennie here.

Sunday, February 9, 1964

A nice day. Mama quite sick and very weak. Blanche here all day. Betty and I over to Aunt Ava’s. Kennie and Dot called. Bill down town and around. No going to work today, it seems so good. Carmen quite fussy. Called Esther and Dorothea.
