The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 30 - May 3, 1964



Thursday, April 30, 1964

Another nice day, still on the cool side. I cleaned some cupboards, refrigerator and electric stove in kitchen. Betty to town and got the car. Billie gone smelting tonight upstate. Betty to the BHS concert. They began to haul some logs today but got stuck in the field. The beef heifer went today 375 pounds. 



Friday, May 1, 1964

Another very nice day. I finished cleaning my kitchen. What a job it has been. Billie got some nice smelts last night, had some for supper. Betty to town to get the groceries. I went over and helped Blanche move some furniture today. They didn’t work on the timber today.



Saturday, May 2, 1964

A beautiful day. I did a little cooking. We cleaned up the whole house. We cleaned the car, went down to see Eleanor Johns about working. Howard is sick. Fern up for supper. Billie up  country again tonight smelting. Mama gone just one month today.



Sunday, May 3, 1964

Another very nice day. Kind of a loafing and relaxing one. Billie got home from smelting this a.m. Done chores and slept till noon or 1 PM. No smelts. Betty and I to town and for Sunday ride while Carmen slept. Bill out checking on strawberry bed, garden etc. Watched game in p.m. Billie to town in p.m. Betty, Carmen and I picked dandelions. Had a chicken supper. Fern and Lloyd as guests. Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava, Holly and David called. Vose called.
