The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 10 - 13, 1964

Friday, April 10, 1964

Dorothea and I upstairs working in the shed chamber. Betty, Louise and Roland Valley worked in Carmen’s room. Betty mad all day long. Dorothea said probably her fault. Kennard called a little while. Fern up here tonight. Dorothea over to Aunt Ava’s. Betty to town. Snow went some today.

Saturday, April 11, 1964 DOROTHEA LEFT

Today Dorothea left to go home. I hated so much to see her go. It was a nice spring day. Blanche went with us. Bill was going, he fixed ceiling in the bathroom and little hallway. Cows still not good, can’t use her milk yet. Carmen awfully tired tonight. Called to see Steve Morgan today. Snow went a lot today.

Sunday, April 12, 1964

Well I feel so sorry for Dorothea. She was sick at heart when she left and when she called last night. I know something was bothering her. It was hard for her to leave. Betty and I to town. Bill and Betty papered bathroom and hallway. Fern, Lloyd, Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava, Bob, Blanche and Kennard called. Dolores’s sister-in-law died. Bill goes to Scotland in fall. September Bill and I go to Scotland.

Monday, April 13, 1964

Fair, on the raw windy side. Roland and Louise came up, they with Betty done some target practicing. Aunt Ava called???? Betty and I did a big wash and we done the ironing after supper. The cow better tonight. Gave a little more milk. Bill painted hallway and bathroom.
