Nanny's Diaries: March 2019

The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 6 - 9,1970

Tuesday, October 6, 1970

A beautiful day, real mild. I went down to Betty’s. She and I and Mr. Horton worked in her garden all day. A great relief to know it is all done. I came home, watched a program, got supper etc. Kim up for supper.

Wednesday, October 7, 1970 Carmen haircut, mine set

I went down to Betty’s to stay with Zak while she took Kim to school. Es downtown with her. Their car is not working good. They didn’t get deep-freeze today. Carmen up for supper, she and I over to June’s after supper. She had her hair cut.

Thursday, October 8, 1970 KITTEN CAME HOME

A very nice day. Up early, got ready, went down to Dorothea’s with Betty. She met Walt and they went looking for a new car. Gone all day. Tonight the kitten came home, found him down to Freddie Potters. Poor little tyke. They all were so glad to see him home. I called at Ferns. Es, Cliff down there for oyster stew supper. I called at Aunt Ava’s.

Friday, October 9, 1970 HOT, very hot

A beautiful day. I went down to stay with Zak and did some washing. Kim to school. I came home, hung my clothes out. Went away with Es to see the pretty leaves. Susan and Vince went too. Came home, cleaned the house, washed floors, defrosted refrigerator. Kim up. Billie home today, day off to go to the fair. Belts came today for lawnmower. Milan, Betty came about 5:30 PM. Es, Billie D, and me down town to shop. Fern, Lloyd, Es, Cliff, Billie and Walt, Betty and kids called. Betty and family down to Susan’s for supper. Very hot day. Billie and Billie played cards. Milan and Betty staying at Es and Cliffs.

Friday, October 2, 1970

Cloudy. I done regular work. Worked at desk. To Naples and Casco with Betty to see about lumber for barn. Billie Deming and kids went to. I did my shopping today.

Another cloudy day. I done regular work. Billie to Norway to see about shoes. Bill worked at Walt’s. Also Cliff, Es, Cliff, gone to see about a TV. Delores went to see about getting some drapes. Billie put a towel rack up for me.

Cloudy, rainy dreary day. Most of the day. It cleared off some in late p.m. Bill and I took the jacks home. Billie hauled dressing all day.

I went down to Betty’s. I did my wash down there. Kim to school. We looked for Black, the kitten.

September 28 - October 1, 1970

Monday, September 28, 1970

Sunny in a.m. I went down to laundry with Fern and Lloyd to do washing. We did Aunt Ava’s at the same time. I came home, hung mine out. Went to town with Betty. Walt home at noon to work on his barn. Betty and I over to Aunt Ava’s in p.m. Also Kennard, Fern and Esther. She had a bad spell.

Tuesday, September 29, 1970

Rained last night and today. I done up my work. Called at Betty’s a minute. She took Zak to doctors. He hurt his leg yesterday. Aunt Ava better today. Kim up here. Walt didn’t come home until late. They didn’t work on the barn tonight.

Wednesday, September 30, 1970

Cloudy and some rain showers. I didn’t do too much. Worked at desk etc. Made some phone calls. Down to Betty’s.

Thursday, October 1, 1970

Partly cloudy. Done up my work. Betty, kids and I to Portland. Took Aunt Ava to Dorothea’s. Betty, Zak and I into town to shop etc. In evening I went to the laundry with Esther. Went down to Susan’s and she went with us too. Cliff and Billie over in eve and played cards. Got a new pad for Christie and Aunt Ava’s dog. Betty got a parakeet.

September 24 - 27, 1970

Thursday, September 24, 1970

A pretty good day. I got up, done regular work, got Kimmy’s and my breakfast. Kim went home. Aunt Ava came for me at 8:30. I cleaned up her house and got home about 1 PM, defrosted the refrigerator. Made a pudding. Down to Betty’s. Came home, got supper. In evening, called at Ferns. Also Es and Cliff called. Billie Deming and Billie Crook got haircuts tonight. Cloudy tonight.

Friday, September 25, 1970

A nice day. I went down town with Esther and did my washing. Down to Betty’s in p.m. Walt, Betty worked on the barn. They got their meat today. I went to town after supper.

Saturday, September 26, 1970

A pretty good day. I went to Norway with Esther. Came home, made rolls etc. Fern up for supper.

A bad rainy day. Billie down to Lawrence’s and got the meat. Esther bought some. Billie Deming here today. Billie and I called on Deming’s in evening. Meat in deep-freeze.

Another nice day. Deming’s here. Sue and Vince too. Billie worked for Lawrence. Walt’s father came today to make his home with Walt and Betty.

Monday, September 21, 1970 HOT and very hot

I went down with Fern, Lloyd and done my washing. Came home, downtown with Betty. I did rest of my housework. Betty and Walt began work on the barn.

A very hot day. I went down to Betty’s. She was getting things done in the barn getting ready to fix it up. New sills, jacking it up etc.

Wednesday, September 23, 1970

A very nice day, not quite so hot. I done up my work, down to Betty’s, helped her some. I came home, made a turkey pie and canned a few tomatoes. Kim came up and is going to stay all night. She is a real sweet little girl. Betty and Walt still working on barn.
