The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, September 12, 1970 Beef went today

A pretty good day. The beef went this morning to be dressed. Billie worked at McDonald’s today mowing second crop for Lawrence. Bill and I to town then over to help Cliff in p.m. Carmen and Kim sick. A very nice day.



Sunday, September 13, 1970

A pretty good day, not very cold. Billie and crew sawed wood at Chet’s. Fern,Lloyd to 50th anniversary for Charlie and Irma. Betty had a birthday party for Zak’s first birthday. Demings, Thomas, Aunt Ava, Ragers, Crooks and Hortons.

Monday, September 14, 1970

I went down to the laundry with Fern and Lloyd to do my washing. Came home. I did a little cooking, cooked a meat pie. Betty and I over to Niemi’s vegetables. I called at Betty’s, we drove down to Ferns. Es and Betty to town to do some banking etc. Billie D up for supper. Carmen didn’t go to school. Billie brought the beef livers and hearts home. They dressed 455 and 505 pounds.


Tuesday, September 15, 1970 TRAILER CAME, Zak one years old



Cloudy in a.m. and heavy rain in p.m. Up early, hurried around and done work. Made a chocolate cake and a white cake. Over to the “gap” at 8 o’clock to see the trailer arrive. At 8: 45 it came from Twin Town Trailer from Oxford. “Lucks”.  Lloyd, Fern, Aunt Ava, Susan, Betty, Delores and Bob. Kimberly, Vince and me. A very pretty trailer. Cliff didn’t work today. Billie and Bill over there tonight after supper. Fern don’t feel very good, a cold.
